Children Becoming Independent

What happens to parents when their children leave the nest to start a life on their own? I think most of them like the idea that their child is independent and will be able to care for him or herself. Too, when the child leaves there is more freedom and privacy for the parent. I know that the prime goal for me as a parent is to see that Jane is able to live independently and happily without being dependent on me. I do hope that after college she will be at that point.
I think one way of determining if a parent has successfully raised his or her child is to see if the child is autonomous as an adult. I don't mean that the son or daughter can't live with the parents forever if that is his or her wish or the parents have no way of caring for themselves without the son or daughter there, but rather whether the child is a capable as adult living alone or with his or her own family.
In the U.S. "moving out" is a rite of passage for many kids, the moment they know they are mature enough to no longer depend daily on mom and dad. I sure hope Jane will leave her parents if she feels she wants to do so when she is older. Haha And no more Jane stories from me for you if she does. Uh....by the way...she should stay with me here in my mail box forever..no moving on for you. But some parents are a little too tied to having their kids around the house. Take the case of one retired Chinese couple. They are so lonely without their only child living in Wuhan, that they have advertised for a "daughter" to look after them in place of their son who has emigrated to Canada More than 100 candidates signed up to try their luck, a Wuhan newspaper reported recently.
Tian Zhendong and Ding Shuhui, a former construction expert and a university professor from central Wuhan, felt "lonely and lost" after their only son moved to Canada with his wife, even though he called home every week. But he didn't want to come back to China. "I regret letting him leave," the newspaper quoted mom Ding as saying. The addicted to their son couple used to visit their son in Canada, but they could not get used to life there, and refused to follow him to anew life in Canada. So after six years of loneliness, the couple decided to seek a daughter to be with them and look after them, who would be given an apartment if she passed the trial period of three years. "We are not looking for a maid, but someone to be with us until we are dead," Dad Tian was quoted as saying.
The "fierce competition" was entering its final stage as the couple were expected to choose the final winner from the last five candidates soon. I wonder if the new daughter gets the inheritance from new mom and dad, or does it go to the Canadian son? Either way, Tina and Ding should forget the idea and get a life of their own while they still have time to live it.
