Modern Myths

I have an observation about the myths so many in society believe. Ok, here it is. I think that modern society, despite improvements in science, a better educated people and greater interaction among humans, has just as many myths as humans believe 1000 years ago. The myths are different ones, but the numbers have not really changed, proof that we human beings are as stupid now as we always have been.
For example, instead of "The earth is flat", we now believe "There must be intelligent life in outer space." (Well, I am not sure there is intelligent life yet on Earth). It's trading one myth for another. maybe you know some myths that bug you. I have a few , and it is fruitless to attempt to list every commonly believed myth society embraces. That's because our stupidity and intolerance is infinite. But here are four of the modern myths that I particularly dislike.
*Global Warming- You could have guessed that would be first. The mass belief in a speculative theory that offers no definitive proof, but the majority of the world population proves only one thing. We are not thinking enough for ourselves and demanding evidence from those who populate ideas.
* Bird Flu- You know, the generally accepted idea that we will have a mass epidemic of a disease that even the most skilled medical researchers do not understand and have no evidence will ever become endemic. Considering there are thousands of other kinds of flu more dangerous than the elusive bird flu one wonders why humans are frightened about it. Oh yes...it's because the media tells them to be.
* Terrorism- "Terrorists are the world's biggest threat today". How many times do I have to hear that one? The truth is that those crazy Islamic terrorists are small in number, limited in capability and likely to have an act that wears thin and burn out. Terrorism has always been a minor menace to the world. These are not particularly dangerous to world stability or to the individual. No doubt you have a bigger chance of being hit by lightening than by being attacked by a terrorist.
* More Connected- The idea that people are more connected to each other today because of communication devices and transportation improvements is just not so. While humans chatter incessantly on their cell phones, write E mails (I hope better ones than mine!) to each other and use other media to communicate humans have always been in touch. Formerly it was a direct communication between a smaller number of people. Today we are so busy connecting with our E mediums we are disconnected from live contact. It's a trade-off, I guess, a different kind of communication but not an increase in contact.
Your turn! Tell me some of the myths today that most people believe.
