Brain Food

I noticed an intriguing ad in my newspaper today, one for a new product from Bryers Ice Cream. It is called SMART with DGA Omega-3. How ridiculous this one is! It is another of the so called "healthy products" that Americans are spending billions on....the feel good fountain of youth mess that companies sell them.
This product alleges that is will "boost your brain" because of DHA OMega 3 that "helps support brain function". Haha it says in the ad "Now that is food for thought". I went to the web site to read more of that silly propaganda and found this.... "Fruit-On-The-Bottom has changed for the better. Now it's Breyers Smart! All Natural Lowfat Yogurt enhanced with DHA Omega-3, an important brain nutrient. DHA is an omega-3 fatty acid that supports healthy brain development and function throughout life. DHA, or docosahexaenoic acid, is an important omega-3 fatty acid that your body needs but can't make efficiently. That's why it's essential to include foods that contain DHA omega-3 in your diet. Americans Do Not Consume Enough DHA Despite its importance, average daily consumption of DHA by U.S. adults is much lower than experts recommend. On average, the typical American diet contains less than 100 mg of DHA per day. This is because meaningful levels of DHA are only naturally found in foods such as fatty fish and organ meats. Fortunately, DHA fortified foods are becoming increasingly available as research continues to demonstrate just how important DHA is to our health."
Why DHA? There has been much scientific study linking DHA to brain development, improved learning and cognition. DHA is found throughout the body, but is concentrated in the brain, eyes and heart. The science indicates: DHA is one of the essential fatty acids that support brain function in adults and brain development in young children. For mothers-to-be, DHA can help support brain function in both mother and developing baby. DHA is important during pregnancy, for the developing brain, eyes and nervous system. Low levels of DHA seen in the elderly may be associated with age-related mental decline, and more research is being done in this area. So no matter what your age you can benefit with Breyers Smart! All Natural Lowfat Yogurt With DHA Omega-3."
I think someone, perhaps arrival company, will litigate to stop this false advertising. At the very least it is deceptive to claim eating a yogurt will make one smarter. Haha I know what you are thinking. "Jim, since you are stupid, go out and buy a case to try it for yourself. You have nothing to lose." Hmmmmmm Maybe....but I think it would have to be a long term experiment to stimulate my dead brain.
The idea that people would believe that eating yogurt will make one smarter is absurd. Yet it sells. There are other "healthy" products, a pill called "Focus Factor" that is sold with a similar claim that make a great deal of money off consumers' gullibility. The yogurt industry has a had another of those phony health products out for some time. It is called Activa, one that is alleged to clear the digestive system and make the person "regular". (I know I am "full of it" but I don't need or use that!).
So far the government hasn't forced the advertisement for Activa to re word itself, but it is not so blatant as SMART is, and that product is slightly helpful as it claims. I just don't think Bryers can support their claims in court that yogurt will make the brain work better. The dysfunctional Bush administration should tell Bryers to stop making the claim, but it won't because it is incompetent.
Let me know if this SMART yogurt appears in your grocery store and if the same kind of blatant deceptive advertising is used in it. Oh....I know I need to stimulate my brain more...but I'll pass on using that yogurt to do it.
