How fat are we getting here in the U.S. (and, most other places for that matter)? Obesity is such a problem now that one reflection of it is the latest in diet help- the dieting hot line. It's a matter of dialing the phone to lose that fat...or that's the intent.
A University of California phone hot line has begun offering 20 recorded messages on healthier eating tips. The service is targeted at two groups that are having the most problems keeping their waist lines restricted, poor people and recent immigrants. The poor crowd just doesn't seem to have the education level needed to recognize a proper eating regimen and the immigrants are quickly abandoning their traditional diets for the fatty, more flavorful junk foods here.
The tool free number is 1-800-514-4494 ( I am not calling you fat!) in case you feel the need, with suggestions that include common sense tips such as getting more exercise and avoiding fatty foods. The messages also advise families to grow their own vegetables and for the poorer crowd to take advantages of free foods like rice, beans and fresh fruits given away by food banks. There are also tips on how parents can better monitor and control their kid's diet. This tip line is in response to an earlier version which offered health care tips to the poor and immigrants.
That one was such an overwhelming success that the diet assistance line seemed to be a natural. "We saw that was an excellent tool to provide information to people who don't have access to the Internet and who perhaps prefer to use a friendlier tool like the telephone, " said one administrator with the program. I know what you are thinking!
How come I don't call the line himself. Hmmmmmmmm I'll think it over after I have another dish of ice cream.
