Overpopulation Solutions

A satirist named Christopher Buckley wrote a book recently called Boomsday in which he addressed a problem that is probably the real (as opposed to the phony and hyped Global Warming) crisis in the world- overpopulation. His solution to overpopulation is to encourage older people to commit suicide. He was joking But there have been quite a few books written, mostly fiction, that suggested equally strange ways to reduce the bulging population of the world that is straining resources to extreme dr degrees. Hehe Yep! I will tell you about a few of them.
- A Modest Proposal- This was the first book written about controlling overpopulation. It was a satire written by the great author Jonathan Swift in the 1700's. In it he attacks the cruel treatment of the government towards Irish peasants. He says they should sell their babies as food, thereby solving both overpopulation and famine. Just like Buckley today criticizes the government for not taking care of the elderly, so did Swift blame the poverty and overpopulation on a government.
- The Time Machine- the old H.G. Wells book, later made into a film that is a classic. In it a privileged group of people are supported by working class make the workers sacrifice by killing "excess" workers to control the population
- Logan's Run- In this imaginative book, the world's resources are so low that everyone is executed when he or she reaches age 21. (A film was later made of the book and Hollywood changes the age to 30)
-Soylent Green- I saw the film version of this years ago. In it the government is issuing free food to starving people. But the problem is the food is made from people the government kills. Ugh! Ground human beef burgers.
-The Giver- In this one overpopulation is death with in a novel way. Required pills given by the government crushes desire for sex.
- Children of Men- This as a film made last year in which nature solves the overpopulation problem without the execution, drugs, or food issues that the other ones above used. What happens is the environmental problems make fertility rates suddenly decline to zero.
Those are all interesting scenarios, though hardly likely to happen any time soon if at all. I think the last, a natural "cure" for overpopulation is the most likely one to occur. Any comments to populate about this?
